Silver Em Presented to Alumnus Greg Brock

Greg Brock, center, received the 2012 Silver Em from the University of Mississippi based on his outstanding career in journalism. Brock, senior editor for standards at The New York Times, came to Ole Miss from Crystal Springs, Miss., and graduated in 1975. During his acceptance, he mentioned that Dr. Jere Hoar, right, professor emeritus, was the first journalism professor he met at Ole Miss and among those who had a lasting influence on his work. The Years Since 1962

Multiple events in the series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of the University of Mississippi were held in the Overby Center at the Meek School of Journalism and New Media, including a concluding event focused on the years since 1962. Speakers, from left, were Dr. Donald Cole, mathematics professor and assistant to the chancellor; Valeria Ross, who coordinates African-American student organizations; and Dr. Gerald Walton, former professor, provost and acting chancellor. Dr. David Sansing, history professor emeritus, introduced the speakers and at right is Dr. Dan Jones, chancellor of the university.

Diverse Education: Journalism Education Undergoes Academic Discipline Makeover

At the University of Mississippi, a team of student journalists recently concluded a series of in-depth stories on life in the Mississippi Delta. The package of stories has been given to the Mississippi Press Association, which will distribute them to newspapers throughout the state for publication at no cost. In the fall, the students will release an hourlong documentary about the Mississippi Delta that will be broadcast on public television.

Faculty at the University of Colorado’s journalism school are working with their colleagues in the business school to develop a joint certificate in media entrepreneurship. Michigan State University offers journalism degrees that specialize in certain subjects, including environmental studies.

Rosalynne Whitaker-Heck, dean of the Scripps-Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, recently put her faculty through several days of extensive multimedia training, a strategy she calls “retooling her faculty.” On one occasion she brought in a faculty member from the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., to train faculty and students in telling stories across multiple platforms. On another occasion, experts from the E.W. Scripps Network conducted faculty training sessions via Skype on subjects ranging from social media tools and ethics in the age of the Internet.

Reunion of 1960 Ole Miss Baseball Team

I was having dinner in the View restaurant above the Marriott at Times Square when I learned that the 1960 Ole Miss baseball team was having a reunion on the weekend of the series against Louisiana State University.

This was the team that went 22-3 for the season and beat the University of Florida for the SEC championship.  However, this also was the team that could not play in the regional tournament that leads to the College World Series.
