A Letter from Interim Dean Deb Wenger

Dear Students,

I hope by now that you’ve heard the news that the School of Journalism and New Media is in celebration mode. This year marks the 10th anniversary of integrated marketing communications on campus and the 75th anniversary for journalism. We like to think that means we have the best of two media-oriented worlds.

Here are some of the many things we think are worth celebrating:

We’ve just enrolled one of the most diverse groups of freshmen we’ve had in our School and we embrace all that these students bring to our classes and our campus.

We awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships for this academic year. Apply NOW for next year’s awards by clicking here.

In addition to our two degrees – IMC and journalism – we have eight specializations, including sports communication, social media, fashion media and media design. Check out the list and talk to an advisor to learn how they all work.

We also now have a 4+1 Program that allows you to get an undergraduate and a graduate journalism degree in just 5 years. Save Mom and Dad money and spend more time in Oxford, the place ESPN calls the best college town in the country.

Those opportunities are layered on top of many great options for involvement that have been available to our students for years.

Work for our Student Media Center or HottyToddy.com. Writers, video storytellers, social media experts, designers, reporters, photographers and those interested in marketing and sales can all find a home in one of these two great learning labs.

Apply to become a School of Journalism & New Media Ambassador. These students put out the welcome mat for us, meet with high-profile visitors and help us keep our school focused on what matters most – YOU!

Join organizations like the Ole Miss American Marketing Association, the Society of News Design, the University of Mississippi Association of Black Journalists or the Public Relations Association of Mississippi to do more of what you love beyond the classroom.

Contact information for the people who can help you get involved with all of these things is posted on our website. And be sure to check out our school’s internship and jobs website — jnmjobs.com – students can sign up and get notifications when new opportunities are posted.

Thank you for being a reason to celebrate in our School!
