School of Journalism and New Media Moves Up in College Factual Rankings

The Meek School of Journalism and New Media is proud to be included in the Top 10 percent of the country’s most popular schools offering degrees in the fields of communication and journalism, according to College Factual.

The education services company features the Meek School in its 2018 edition of rankings, which are data-driven and focused on helping students choose the right colleges and universities for themselves. The school also ranks in the Top 10 percent of schools for “Radio, Television and Digital Communication.”

In 2017, the school was ranked 186 out of 1209 communication and journalism programs for which College Factual provided data. In 2018, the school was just below the Top 100, ranking 101 of 1218.

“We’re very pleased but not surprised to see our ranking climb,” said Assistant Dean Scott Fiene, who heads the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) for the school. “We’ve got a highly talented and experienced faculty that passionately cares about students and their success, and that manifests itself in a lot of ways — for example, increasing enrollment, consistently high student satisfaction, improved national rankings and many other things.”

Fiene went on to say that, while numbers and rankings are nice, these things are not the school’s primary focus.

“Our goal is still to prepare journalism and IMC students for their careers, and hopefully to help them be better global citizens. The accolades we receive are just the byproduct of our focus on that.”

The broadcast program ranked 28 out of 243 in 2017 and climbed to 15 out of 240 in terms of popularity for 2018.

Assistant Dean Deb Wenger is also on the broadcast faculty and says the ranking reflects the opportunities the school provides to students.

“From the student-produced daily newscast to the TV sports reporting workshops we offer each year to the video storytelling trips students take each semester, we are focused on creating hands-on learning experiences for our students in and out of the classroom,” Wenger said.

The Meek School offers two bachelor’s degrees — one in journalism and one in integrated marketing communications. Prospective students can contact university admissions or schedule a school visit: 662.915.7146.
