A native of Azerbaijan, Alex (Alakbar) Raufoglu is a data savvy journalist with more than 15 years of experience. He is deeply involved in media freedom advocacy in Azerbaijan, Turkey and the wider region.

In his work, he focuses on Caucasus and the wider Black Sea regions. Since 2008, he has lived in the U.S., where he worked for several media outlets as an international journalist. His coverage interests include Eurasian democracy, rights, media and other freedoms, as well as peace and security.

Raufoglu is the co-founder of Eurasia Media Institute (EMI), a Virginia-based startup that closely monitors Eurasia media concerns. Currently he manages several projects at EMI. He also represents Azerbaijan’s independent news agency Turan in the U.S. Until recently he worked for a news outlet covering Southeastern Europe, based in Washington D.C.

Raufoglu is currently obtaining an MA in Interactive Journalism from American University’s School of Communications.
