Martin Gee, senior art director for Time magazine, used Google Hangouts to chat with students in the Overby Center Oct. 22. Gee was invited to speak by the Ole Miss Society for News Design, a campus organization dedicated to growing students’ knowledge of news design and exposure to excellence in visual journalism from around the world.

Gee began the presentation talking about himself and the work he does as an art director, including his daily routine and rigorous deadline schedule. Gee also was very interested in talking with the students.

Students asked questions ranging from advice on vector imaging, to the pros and cons of buying the new LEGO set. One student asked what he thought about freelance designing, to which Gee responded that he personally liked the security of a day job.

Ole Miss Society for News Design offers students the chance to meet with professionals within the design industry. These individuals provide real-world advice and sometimes conduct tutorials that allow students to take away a new skill.

Ole Miss SND typically meets on the second Tuesday of every month. It is a chance for students to gather knowledge and inspiration from professionals and from fellow students, gain confidence in design software, and make connections within the industry.
