For the second consecutive year, the University of Mississippi was named Grand Champion at the Southeast Journalism Conference. Twenty-seven colleges attended this year’s conference, held Feb. 9-11 at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Ole Miss students dominated both the onsite competitions and the Best of the South contest.
University of Mississippi students were crowned Grand Champion based on points students accumulated in onsite competitions on Friday. The students who won awards during the onsite contests were:
Kelsey Dockery, who won first place for Page Layout; Aubry Killion, who won first place for Television Reporting; Stewart Pirani, who won second place for Radio News Reporting; Cain Madden, who tied for second place for Media Law; Jon Haywood, who tied for second place for Media History; and the team of Margaret Ann Morgan, Bracey Harris and Gerard Manogin, who won third place for Media Ethics. All are Meek School of Journalism and New Media students who work at the Student Media Center.
The Southeast Journalism Conference includes universities from eight states. Two major contests are sponsored: The onsite competitions, and the Best of the South contest. The Best of the South winners were announced at a banquet Friday night.
There were more than 400 entries in this year’s Best of the South contest. The contest year covered mid-November 2010 through mid-November 2011.
The Ole Miss winners were: Cain Madden, first place for Best News Reporter; Miriam Taylor, first place for Best Feature Writer; Josh Clark, first place for Best News-Editorial Artist-Illustrator; Stephen Quinn, third place for Best Television Journalist; Austin McAfee, third place for Best Press Photographer; Victoria Boatman, fifth place for Best News Graphic Designer; Petre Thomas, seventh place for Best News Graphic Designer.
Sixteen students – most of them journalism majors – attended this year’s conference, along with Student Media Center Director Patricia Thompson.
