Ole Miss journalism alumna Laura Houston Santhanam (’05)  explores whether local online news startups are a fleeting trend in her article “What the Patch?”, published in the most recent edition of Quill, the publication of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Santhanam, a former editor of The Daily Mississippian, was inducted into the Ole Miss Hall of Fame during her time as a student and now works for the Pew Research Center/Project for Excellence in Journalism in Washington D.C.  After graduation she worked briefly at the Chattanooga Times and then left for a job at the Arizona Republic.

She recently earned her master’s degree in public policy at American University.
